[ reply to this post ] AUGUST 12, 2007 Name the Pandas Jeff Holubitsky, The Edmonton JournalAnimal health technician Sandy Helliker has spent a lot of sleepless nights on her couch caring for the Edmonton Valley Zoo's rare red panda cubs. During their critical first month, one of the cubs was treated with antibiotics for an infection, and both had to be fed with tubes into their stomachs to avoid sucking a special milk formula into their tiny lungs. "For the full period I've had them, that was probably of the most concern to me," Helliker said. Zookeepers are now confident the cubs will survive and are asking for the public's help to name the pair. It's too early to be certain, but they believe the animals are a male and a female." The Valley Zoo's rare red panda cubs were born June 26. A contest to name them is underway. Entries can be submitted by e-mail to attractions@edmonton.ca. See the user-submitted names here.
