Mission

The Red Panda Project is committed to protecting the red panda and preserving its habitat through the empowerment of local communities by adaptive community-based research, education, and sustainable development.

Vision

The Red Panda Project ensures the survival of the red panda and its habitat for future generations to study, experience and enjoy.

The Need

The red panda and its habitat are endangered due to conversion of forest to farms and pastures by overgrazing. The Red Panda Project creates innovative alternatives that increase the probability of survival of the red panda.

Red Panda are being released into the wild again

Darjeeling, Dec 9: A zoo in Darjeeling, which has bred two Red Pandas in captivity, plans to release the endangered mammal in the wild by early next year. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP) has in the past successfully bred and released the animal under the Project Red Panda launched in 1986. Read More >

Brian Williams, Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal (1996-1998) and in Guatemala (1999-2000), later became a Fulbright Scholar and conducted research on the status of the red panda in the Panchthar-Ilam-Singhalila corridor.
